How to use it

Getting the best from this cooler

  1. Fill the 100 L tank with clean water up to the level mark. Ice is optional and only helps for the first few minutes.
  2. Switch the pump on first and give the pads a minute to wet through before turning the fan up — dry pads do not cool.
  3. Leave a window or a door partly open. An evaporative cooler adds moisture to the room and needs a path for the humid air to leave; in a sealed room it will stop feeling cold.
  4. Point the intake at fresh outside air where you can. The drier the incoming air, the bigger the temperature drop across the pads.
  5. Rinse the pads and the tank through with clean water every few weeks during the season to stop scale and algae building up.
  6. At the end of summer, drain the tank completely, let the pads dry, and store the cooler under a cover.

Run the unit on a 230 V - 50 Hz supply with an earthed socket. Never move it with a full tank, and always apply the wheel brakes once it is in position.

It is rated for spaces up to 1,500 sq ft. Air throw is rated at 140 feet at 6,000 cfm. Measure the longest run the air has to travel and make sure it is inside that throw distance; in a taller or more open space, or one with direct sun on the walls, size up or use two units placed apart.

It draws 375 watts on a 230 V - 50 Hz supply — roughly a fifth to a tenth of what an air conditioner covering the same floor area would pull. It is inverter compatible, so it keeps running through a power cut on a domestic inverter.

Run time depends on fan speed, ambient temperature and how dry the air is — an evaporative cooler uses more water on the hottest, driest days, which is exactly when it cools best. In typical north Indian summer conditions a full 100 litre tank will see out most of a working day on medium speed. A water level indicator on the body shows when it needs topping up. It also has an auto-fill inlet, so it can be connected to a tap and left to top itself up.

It uses high-density honeycomb pads. Honeycomb presents far more wetted surface to the incoming air than wood wool, so more water evaporates per pass and the air leaving the cooler is colder. Rinse the pads through with clean water every few weeks in season and drain the tank when you put the cooler away; looked after that way a set of pads lasts several seasons.

It has fixed, manually adjustable louvers with 4 way air deflection, and runs 3 fan speeds (low, medium, high). It is operated from the control panel on the body; there is no remote.
